Happy belated Valentine’s Day! I drove from Austin to Houston three times in the past week and also applied an entire tube of silicone to the shower in my house so I’m a little loopy and my head hurts but LET’S DO THIS!
#13: Rudyard’s (Houston), February 13 with Holy Money, Mountain of Smoke, and Lions of Tsavo
After loading an IMMENSE amount of equipment up the stairs into Rudz we settled in for a long night of HEAVY SHIT.
Holy Money played with the lights off and were terrifying.
Drummer Alex Hughes, though he sounded enormous, was having a major problem with his kick drum walking around the stage, despite the two 25-lb weights he was using to anchor it. For those of you who aren’t drummers, this is basically a waking nightmare. Chris Ryan told me he had to watch with his eyes closed, ha ha. Ultimately I got so squicked out that I walked onstage and held Alex’s kick drum in place for the rest of the set. Which, I’m glad I did, because as good as his kit sounds, it sounds like a HUNDRED TIMES BETTER when it’s right next to your face! A+++ would act as human drum rug again.
Mountain of Smoke rocked, as always.
This photo courtesy of Janet. Later in the set I saw her shooting Brooks standing on a table like he likes to do. I don’t know what happened to those pics but I don’t have them, so this will have to do.
Lions of Tsavo took home the awards for Most Gear and Most Hair.
(This one’s Janet too)
And of course, they played great. Rudyard’s has (for my money) the best sound in town, and being able to hear everything these guys were doing clearly was a real treat.
(I took this one)
Our set went OK, but the best part came during “Life in the Hive.” We’re just doin our thing, cranking out the rock, and suddenly we hear a familiar voice on the mic:
FUCK YEAH! This moment totally made the show for us. Anthony came back to do the chorus to “Get Your Dead Straight” and shut things down with a roar.
Blackjaw (first performance!)
Life in the Hive
Last of the Green Vial
Lesbian Cycling Drama
Orison (which I played correctly this time!)
Get Your Dead Straight
Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who was there to experience all of this remarkable music! At the end of the night, everyone that was there went home with a smile on their face. And that’s what really matters.
Big news coming soon- stay with us!
