Our show at Fitzgerald’s on the 15th got off to an unpleasant start when we discovered while loading up for the gig that my cymbal bag had not made the trip back from No Thanks Fest. We’ve got feelers out to locate it, but in the meantime HUGE THANKS to Brandon Zavala (aka “Other Brandon”) from Co-Pilot for letting me borrow his cymbals so that I could still make crashy noises during the show. Otherwise I would have been kicking it Mo Tucker style!
Not that Mo Tucker doesn’t know what’s up. Gettin’ to the gig on the subway and shit. What’s that? She’s a Tea Party wacko now? Drag.
#11: Fitzgerald’s (Houston), with Intronaut and ANCIIENTS
We opened up this time, and it was a pretty good set. Solid sound on stage. Stu Smith, who used to play with me in the Jonx, showed up to see us, so that was cool. Same set as at NTF:
A Ruined Oak
This Is For Zora
Lesbian Cycling Drama
Welcome To The Adders’ Land
Get Your Dead Straight
The ANCIIENTS guys (from Vancouver) had a lot of hair!
. . . with a sound to match: gallopy Sabbath-esque no-bullshit rock. They had some shoutier stuff too, but the classic stick-to-your-ribs red-meat-type shit was what grabbed me. Very cool guys, too- their singer bought a record from us before I realized who he was. I totally would have given you one dude! 🙁
Also not really worth noting: their drummer looked SUPER young.
Dang kid, like, shouldn’t you be in school and stuff? Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be heavy metal musicians! &c.
Let the record show that for all I know this dude is older than me. In any case he totally fucking rocked it so I should stop making an ass of myself.
Intronaut brought the house down with a sprawling, flawless performance (complete with 10-minute tabla solo!) and a legit laser light show:
Badass! Did I mention they had a fog machine
These dudes also had some REALLY cool t-shirts. I bought the 10th anniversary tour one (with the four-eyed lion from the poster) for Angela, but I was sorely tempted by this masterpiece:
Thanks very much to Intronaut, ANCIIENTS and Fitzgerald’s for letting us share the stage. I don’t know about you guys, but this year, I’m thankful, more than anything else, for progressive metal.
. . .. HEY! Don’t leave yet. Our next show is at Fitzgerald’s (where else!) on January 3 with our studiomates and tight bros Co-Pilot, Austin’s DSGNS, and special guest Sleep Envy, a new project featuring Evin Jones of Ronin King, Steve Smith of Defending the Kingdom, From Beyond and Motion Turns It On, and a SURPRISE THIRD MEMBER! It’s Sam. Sam plays guitar.
I’m actually really excited about seeing Sleep Envy- check out their demo, it’s really good!
