Hey what’s up y’all. We’ve been holed up for the past couple of months working doggedly to learn the insane amount of material that we’ve elected to put on this record. This has been complicated somewhat by the recent expiration of the 35-year warranty on my body.
My doctor’s way of saying “you are too old for this shit.”
Anyway, despite the truly ridiculous amount of work we still have in front of us, for some dumb reason we decided to sideline all that for a couple weeks so that we could play some shows.
Oh wait, come to think of it we actually had a really good reason, namely an opportunity to play with the incredible He Whose Ox Is Gored, whom you may remember from Total Fest XIII as the band who dropped an 8×10 on their guitarist’s foot and then prioritized “slaying everyone” over “taking his ass to the hospital.” I mean that’s how I remembered them at least.
October 29, 2015: The Alley Kat (Houston) with STRESS33 and He Whose Ox Is Gored
With the huge amount of other stuff happening on Halloween weekend and October in general being the time when nightlife in Houston awakens from its three-month summer torpor, it was sort of tough finding another band to do this date. Fortunately the good dudes in STRESS33 stepped up to open the show with a fun set of dirty hardcore.
Their energy and configuration reminded me a little of my brother’s band Waste Layer, albeit a little looser and more toward the punk side of things. I really dug their dual vocals- guitarist Juan Carlos in particular delivered some quite satisfying screeches.
To be 100% honest, there was so much going on when we played with Ox last that I didn’t really absorb that much of what they were doing. Which meant that I was not super prepared for what was about to happen. So I’m messing with my hardware off to the side and all of a sudden I hear this SOUND.
And I step over to take a look and Lisa Mungo is vibrating like she’s about to explode and screaming her fucking head off. And these other three guys are thrashing out these monster heavy futuristic odd-time grooves.
It was INTENSE. And the best thing I’ve seen onstage in a while.
(He Whose Ox Is Gored have a new double LP out on Bleeding Light Records. It’s SOOOO GOOOOD. Go buy it!)
Here’s another thing I was apparently unprepared for: playing a show! I don’t think I’ve ever had so many gear problems during one set, from my hi-hat pedal coming apart in my hardware case to my kick drum walking all over the stage to one of my cymbal nuts vanishing into the freaking ether. Fortunately, balancing out my difficulties, Sam and Jamie both christened new speaker cabinets from Black Market Custom and Steamboat Ampworks, respectively, and they sounded KILLER. So overall, the verdict was that we did not suck.
