Records were made. Empires were won and lost.
Fruit roll-ups were eaten.
I saw Mountain of Smoke 3 or 4 times. They had a guitar player for a while, it was pretty boss!
Finally the fateful week of SXSW 2016 arrived. Or week-plus really- with unofficial shows creeping earlier every year, SXSW effectively now starts the weekend BEFORE the music conference, DURING the Interactive conference. This is exhausting. But it does give you more opportunities to see spillover shows in Houston, as when British Burroughsians Conan dropped into the House of Creeps, with a certain new band from a certain prolific guitar player tapped for support:
As for Austin: perennial Omotai booster and unbelievable sweethearttexas James Gonzalez of the Texas Metal Collective was kind enough to book us on a plum time slot at his Red, White and Blood festival at the Midway Field House on Friday.
We were pumped to play with a bunch of good bands- and also because art-crust darlings Dead To A Dying World (last seen at a certain Dallas gig opening for Spacebeach) were headlining the Wounded Earth/ Worshiper Cabinets showcase at the Lost Well the night before.
Here, James “Tha” Gruder soundchecks with a towering rendition of “Theme From Jurassic Park”
“DadWorld” (credit: Josh Dawkins of Lions of Tsavo) hadn’t played in Austin in two years, and aside from Daine, we hadn’t seen any of them since Tofu Carnage last year- and even then, hardly at all. So it was great to catch up with them. They’re playing Roadburn in a few weeks. YUP.
March 18, 2016- Red, White and Blood (Austin)
This festival featured a couple dozen bands spread over two stages at the Midway Field House- except, as it turned out, there wasn’t sufficient power to run both stages simultaneously. James hustled up and got things reorganized, but we arrived on the scene with some trepidatio- OH SHIT IS THAT MOTHMAN?!?!
FUCK YEAH MOTHMAN! Damn those guys rule.
Anyway yeah, scheduling got all messed up, but everyone got to play.
(My deepest apologies to this band, whose name escapes me. They were good)
“You’re only allowed to take a picture of me holding both beers if you say that this one’s almost empty.” I swear, this is what he said.
These guys tore it UP. SICK blastbeats.
Aw check out Gonzalez back there, lookin’ all frowny 🙁 It’s gonna be OK buddy. You’re gonna get through this!
BTW guess what’s back in style everyone
Ryoko of Clit Eastwood jamming out on the floor, which is super fun to watch, somewhat less fun to photograph
My word, is it time to rock already?
To save time, we ended up cutting our set down to three songs: Blackjaw, Last of the Green Vial, and Back Office, PLUS a brief unplanned interlude after Melissa’s rig set off the limiter light on the crossover in the backline bass cab. So yeah, now we know what THAT does.
“Bug eyes” Waters, we calls him.
That’s it for right now- we’ll be back with news about the record real soon. Oh yeah, also we’re playing at the Satellite Bar on Sunday, 4/17 with True Widow. YUSS
WHOA WAITAMINUTE BRANDON LEMONS IS HERE WHAT THE FUCK!!!
