Deep South mini-tour day 3: Lafayette

Hey! We’re sorry this blog post is a little late but our drummer/blog dude had to move his family out of their house and y’all he is SO TIRED.

Anyway! We rejoin our heroes in the heart of a vibrant, historic city; where the only truly American art form, jazz, was invented; the Mecca of American culture.

THE LINE FOR SQUARE DONUTS IS TOO FUCKIN LONG YA’LL

UNACCEPTABLE

Seriously though New Orleans is an amazing place and playing there with a rock band was a bucket list item for us. Our deepest thanks.

Onward to glory. Sam’s other band, Pyreship, had played Lafayette before and we were excited about having a turn at it ourselves. Thanks to Nick and the Freetown Boom Boom Room for having not only us BUT ALSO the second best venue name in America, and thanks also to James Marshall of Forming the Void for setting up the show. (Go listen to Forming the Void’s new album Rift– it’s really good!)

Saturday, October 27, 2018- The Freetown Boom Boom Room (Lafayette, LA) with Ismonic, Space Metal and Devoured By Plagues

Devoured By Plagues opened up at the Boom Boom Room, and we were all pleasantly shocked to hear them bust out with some extremely legit Cannibal Corpse-style old-school death metal.

We don’t play with bands like this very often, let alone ones that know what they’re doing, and we were impressed. I thought vocalist Aaron Hayes and drummer Bennett Phares in particular did an exceptional job with the punishing technical requirements of true death metal.

We also got to see a five-string bass and seven-string guitar in the wild for the first time in quite a while. These are not as common as they used to be!

If you’re in Lafayette, DBP and a bunch of other bands are playing Grindfest 2018 at the Boom Boom Room. Go out and get nasty!

Like us, Space Metal trucked in (Space? Truck? Get it??) from New Orleans. Their jammy, blues-based stoner rock put us all in mind of Houston stalwarts the Linus Pauling Quartet, which marks the second time I have referenced LP4 on this blog.

Space Metal’s bass player was also slinging a pretty ill piece of gear

Wait- what is that thing behind him? ENHANCE

Is that a BASS SYNTH?!? This Sting-ass mother fucker, bringing that “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” flavor to the FREETOWN BOOM BOOM ROOM. That is DEDICATION. That is REAL GEAR GAME. damn.

Space Metal’s second album recently dropped on Bandcamp- go check it out!

On a more serious note, Space Metal’s singer Travis announced toward the end of the set that their drummer Chris’s brother had passed away only the previous week. Our deepest condolences to Chris and his family, and thank you for sharing this evening with us.

We were up next. Played the same set as in New Orleans. Here’s a special surprise: Ross Brown of 10 South Productions caught “Tusk Aurora” on high-quality, multi-camera video!

Hell fuckin yeah! It’s like you’re there. Thanks Ross!

After us were Ismonic to close out the night.

Here you can see Jarod Gaspard completing our Badass Bass Trifecta for the evening. I guess that’s a Dunable R2? I dunno, guitars, psshh, whatever, they’re not the coolest instrument ever invented or anything.

Ismonic bill themselves as a progressive band, and they are- just consider Coty Rogers’s epic rackmount drum setup which I am kicking myself for not getting a picture of, so many splash cymbals, OMG- but personally I heard a pretty good dose of 90s alternative rock too. Maybe some Filter in there? A little Type O Negative? Judge for yourself from their 2017 debut EP.

Thanks again to James and Nick for making this show happen, and to Devoured By Plagues, Space Metal and Ismonic for playing with us!

Since then? Guess it’s back to the grind
